The Benefits of Replacing Your Window Glass

If you have noticed a rise in energy bills, condensation on your windows, or an increase in noise from outside, then it’s time to consider replacing your window glass.

Replacing your window glass can be an easy and inexpensive way to upgrade the look and feel of your home and save money in the long run.

Let’s take a look at some of the benefits that come with replacing your window glass.

Energy Efficiency

Window replacement can give you a substantial increase in energy efficiency. In fact, windows contribute around 25-30% of a home’s heating and cooling!

This is because new windows are better equipped to insulate against outside temperatures than older windows, which means less warm air escaping through cracks or seams in the window panes during cold weather.

This keeps more cool air inside during summer months, as well as helps to reduce energy loss and lower your utility bills all year round.

Noise Reduction

If you live near busy roads or construction sites, you know how important it is to reduce noise from outside sources.

Insulated glass can help do just that, providing a barrier between outdoor sounds and indoor peace and dampening vibrations from loud noises like thunderstorms or nearby construction work.

Increased Natural Light

Another benefit of replacing your window glass is increased natural light.

Newer windows tend to have larger panes of glass that allow more light into the room, making it brighter and more inviting.

Plus, larger panes also provide better views outside and let you appreciate nature from inside your home without having to worry about drafts or uncomfortable temperatures.

Improved Safety

Window replacement improves not only the aesthetics of your home but also its security.

This is especially important if you have large windows that are difficult to protect with traditional security measures such as bars or grills – with new windows installed, there’s no need for any additional safety features as they already come with built-in safety features, including shatterproof glass and locks.

Additionally, modern window frames are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions while maintaining their shape and strength – something older frames cannot always provide.

Increased Home Value

Replacement windows instantly add value to any home. In fact, CNBC reports that window glass replacement yields around 85% ROI! So for every $10k spent on new windows, you’re getting to sell your home for $8.5k more!

Not only do they create a polished look on the outside of the house, but they also increase energy efficiency and reduce noise levels inside as well.

All these factors combined make replacement windows an attractive feature for prospective buyers if you decide to put your home on the market.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Replacing Your Window Glass

Broken window glass can be a frustrating problem, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right tools and a bit of know-how, you can replace your window glass yourself.

So if you’re looking for a cost-effective way to restore your windows, read on for our step-by-step guide.

Gather the Right Supplies

Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary supplies handy. You’ll need safety glasses, gloves, a putty knife or razor blade, an awl (or another sharp pointy tool), some sandpaper, and of course, your new piece of glass.

Make sure to measure the opening precisely so that your replacement glass fits perfectly when you install it.

Remove Old Glazing Compound and Putty

Your next step is to remove any old glazing compound and putty from around the edges of the window frame.

If there are any nails still left in place from the previous installation job, use the awl or other sharp pointy tool to carefully remove them without damaging the wood of the frame itself.

Once all nails have been removed, use a putty knife or razor blade to scrape away any remaining traces of glazing compound or putty until only clean wood remains.

Sand Down The Frame and Insert New Glass

Now that your frame is clean and ready for new glass installation take some sandpaper and lightly sand down all four sides of the frame before wiping off any dust with a damp cloth.

Once you’ve done this, insert your new piece of glass into the opening and secure it with glazing points (small metal pins).

Then apply fresh glazing compound around all four sides of the window frame, ensuring that it covers both sides of each glazing point securely. Allow this layer to dry completely before moving onto your final step.

Finish Off with Putty

When your glazing compound has dried completely (usually about 24 hours), it’s time for putty!

Take some pliable putty from either a tube or preformed strips (available at most hardware stores) and spread it evenly around all four sides of the window frame using either your fingers or a putty knife if desired.

Make sure that none of this material gets inside either side of the window frame, as this could cause damage over time if left untreated.

Finally, once everything is in place, let everything dry overnight before taking off any excess material with either sandpaper or a wet rag, depending on what type of finish you would like on your windowsill after completion!
